ESTABLISHED 1850

They say Edgar Allan Poe’s ghost wanders these streets — drawn to the laughter, the lanterns, and the faint scent of bourbon and candle wax. Here at Poe’s Pub: The House of Spirits & Shadows, we keep his memory alive with our own brand of Baltimore Gothic — skeletons who sip, ravens who gossip, and a home that’s equal parts eerie and inviting. And if you listen closely, the parlor still hums with the crackle of an old phonograph. We’ve gathered its ghostly soundtrack — songs from the ’30s and ’40s — to accompany your stay.

Edgar Allan Poe: The Original Keeper of Spirits & ShadowsBorn in Boston in 1809 and bound forever to Baltimore in death, Edgar Allan Poe lived a life as haunting as the tales he penned. Orphaned young, ever the wanderer, he moved through the world as both poet and phantom — a man drawn to the flicker of candlelight and the company of ghosts.Poe’s words gave voice to what lingers in the dark: lost loves, lingering spirits, and the fragile boundary between reason and madness. His verses and stories — The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher — opened the door to the gothic soul of America, where beauty and dread dance together in candlelight. It’s said his spirit still walks the cobblestones of Baltimore, drawn to laughter, lamplight, and the faint clink of a glass. Here at the House of Spirits & Shadows, we raise our cups to him — to the poet who found grace in gloom, and to every restless soul still seeking comfort in the dark.
